Tecniche Narrative in "Novelle Per Un Anno". (Italian Text) (Pirandello).

The dissertation is an attempt to investigate and define the narrative techniques employed in Luigi Pirandello's Novelle per un anno. One of the basic assumptions of the study is not to seek an evolution in Pirandello's concepts and ideas as well as in the structural and narrative approaches of his short fiction since most of these elements are present from the beginning. Rather, one may thus speak of different narrative techniques. Accordingly, for our purposes a division in several groups suggested itself in view of the diverse narrative techniques employed in Pirandello's short fiction. Pirandello's short stories are divided in several groups, each with summarizing and explicative subtitle. The first group we chose to call the traditional, includes many of Pirandello's short stories placed in a Sicilian "ambiente". In these, the author recreates the world of his native island in its singular aspects. The stories are characterized by narrative techniques which recall more traditional modes of narration, such as the continuous and omniscient presence of a narrator. The leading second group is the dramatic, suggested by the prominent narrative technique of these stories, the dialogue. It is through an extensive use of dialogue that these pieces succeed in preserving the immediacy of the spoken language and situation. In these stories the figure of the narrator recedes, while the characters acquire a more dominant role. The third group deals with a narrative technique borrowed from the cinematographic model of communication. The narration of these stories is carried out by means of a prearranged disposition of narrative blocks, a constant change of scenes and finally the lens technique of a camera that records happenings. The fourth chapter focuses on the last Pirandellian stories which we define as oneiric. Again, it is the central figure of the narrator that is being investigated here as well as his role in creating the peculiar dream-atmosphere of the story. A last chapter is dedicated to the function of Pirandellian humor shown as basic to the structural setup of the single stories.
